Healthcare is a key governmental priority in Ireland. Expenditure has annually
exceeded the rate of inflation and currently totals 25% of total government
spending (increasing from €3.7 billion in 1997 to over €14 billion in 2007). This level of investment is set to deliver significant progress for patient care across a wide range of key areas. Overall the Irish government is making significant changes:

• Total patient admissions to hospitals currently exceed 1 million.
• Waiting times for operations have dramatically reduced.
• Infant mortality has fallen significantly.
• Breast screening has been introduced.
• Preparations are underway for cervical screening.
• Nearly 1500 additional acute hospital beds have been introduced since 1997.

With the establishment of the Health Service Executive (HSE) in 2005, the Irish
Government began the largest programme of change ever in the Irish public
health service. In excess of 100,000 staff are employed in meeting Ireland's
responsibilities for health and social care needs. The result has signalled a new
era in Irish healthcare.
