Jack, 80, pimps his ride

Sick of dealing with Tassie's wet and cold winters, Jack Daft, 80, took his motorised mobility scooter to the team at Moonah's Dynamic Welding and Engineering, who designed and custom-built a cabin for it - with flaming skull stickers, special "JACK" number plates and, of course, a basket in front.

Warm and dry in his cabin, Jack has been moving around Glenorchy and Moonah at up to 12km/h. He could not be happier with his modified ride.

"I was getting colds and flus before and when you get up in years you don't want that if you can avoid it, so I thought I'd put a top on it," he said.

"It's unbelievable. It's warm, stable, and the wind can't get in and blow it around. It's beautiful when it's raining, you don't have to wait for a bus or sit at a wet bus stop, you just jump in your little cabin and away you go."

Brett Poulson, from Dynamic Welding, said the scooter took a team of tradesmen a week of solid work to finish.

How old is the person that will be using the mobility scooter? A younger rider will likely prefer a faster scooter while an older rider may prefer maximum stability. Some models have a low stand height which makes them easier to mount. Each model will have its own characteristics and some will clearly be better suited to an individual user.

What kind of terrain will be followed with the scooter? Is the user living in a relatively flat area? Or are there any hills that they might have to pass through? The surfaces they might have to travel through are paved, or have gravel or grass? Answers to all such questions will help to determine which scooter is best suited to the user.
