This is me: The not-so-sweet life
This is her only way to survive.Kantor, 21, has Type 1 diabetes. These routine shots of insulin help her maintain the stable blood sugars necessary for her to live. Ultimately, Kantor depends on friends and family to survive. They are instrumental in helping her cope with diabetes.
She sits comfortably cross-legged in her desk chair wearing a blue-gray T-shirt and black yoga pants. Kantor’s long, curly black hair is pulled back and rests on her left shoulder. She is at her most relaxed in the Perlroth suite she calls home. Her bedroom walls are lined with pictures of friends smiling. Kantor stares at the wall above her desk and offers a grin every time she glances back at them.
“Friendships just kind of happen. Those close friends that I have, I consider the family I choose for myself because they’re such special people in my life,” Kantor says with an infectious smile. “If it weren’t for them … then I wouldn’t be the person I am today. Every person I met has shaped me, and I’m grateful for that.
U-Utah's mobility products assist physically disabled individuals ...
The Ergonomics and Safety Program at the University of Utah has partnered with the organization Able Pilot to produce the Phoenix, a paraglider that enables paraplegics to take flight by piloting their own craft with minimal assistance. The first flight lifted off this summer. The university partnered with Able Pilot because of its established research and instructional program, designed to establish and support the development and testing of formal paragliding, hang gliding, and ultra-light instructional methods for pilots with physical disabilities.
“This program is an absolute bulls-eye for our dual mission of creating technologies that improve the quality of human life and support successful commercialization efforts for the University and our partners,” says James Taylor, business and technology development manager at U-Utah’s Technology Commercialization Office (TCO).
As part of the Office of Technology Venture Development (Tech Ventures), TCO works with Don Bloswick, professor in the mechanical engineering department and director of the Ergonomics and Safety Program, to patent and license the IP that his lab generates. In addition to their efforts in the design and development of rehabilitation and assist devices, the ingenuity of students and faculty in the program is applied toward innovations for the workplace. One example is a series of exoskeletons for people suffering from back injuries — some designed to aid in lifting, enabling a faster return to work. Students also have developed wheelchairs that employ new propulsion systems or function seamlessly on snow and sand....

Marcel touches the child-adult in all of us, earnest but funny in that unfiltered way children speak to adults in rushed tones, as if they can't take in their surroundings fast enough: Guess what I use for a bean-bag chair? A raisin.
