KELLYVILLE: PETER Dalrymple is not only coping with the agony of wasting muscles but will this week become a dual sports international.
The courageous university student has been stricken with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy since he was six weeks old and in a wheelchair when he was 10.
But that has only sharpened his desire to do well on the sporting field, where his tenacity and skills made him an automatic choice for the Australian electric wheelchair hockey team.
This week, he is a proud member of the Australian side seeking gold at the World Cup in France.
``I’m pretty excited, especially about competing against the best teams in the world,’’ Mr Dalrymple, 21, of Kellyville, said.
``Playing for my country is a massive achievement and I didn’t think it would happen twice.’‘
``Wheelchair soccer is a new sport for me and we’ve been training really hard for the past four months.
No time for pity: Wheelchair soccer star Pete Winslow doesn't want it ...
Pete Winslow doesn't have legs, but he plays soccer.
He doesn't have a right arm, but he plays golf.
He doesn't have all 10 fingers, but he plays the trombone.
He doesn't have self-pity, and he knows how to handle people who pity him - with humor.
"I tell 'em it was sharks," said Winslow, a 17-year-old senior at Stillwater Area High School. "I tell them I can't watch 'Shark Week' ... because it's just too painful for me."
His lack of limbs has nothing to do with sharks - he was born that way. But it hasn't kept him from being happy, or from being a champion.
Winslow plays wheelchair soccer for the U.S. National Power Soccer Team and will be traveling to Paris on Nov. 2-6 for the annual international tournament.
"I can't wait - I have never been out of the country before," Winslow said.
The tournament will be another step on a trail of accomplishments that no one expected....

Athletes. You can tell who meets the bill by their strong muscles, superior hand-eye coordination, and if all else fails, the jersey on their back. But when looking at wheelchair bound Hayden Clarke and Connor Walsh, no one would expect them to be competitive soccer players, who just might’ve placed fifth in the entire nation for power wheelchair soccer.
Clarke, a freshman, suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy. It is a progressive muscle weakness that begins in the legs and will eventually move up to the neck, causing difficulty in breathing.
Walsh, a sophomore, has Congenital muscular dystrophy, which onset at birth.
“We can do about the same stuff but I was born with mine and it will stay about the same while Hayden’s will gradually get worse,” said Walsh.
Despite these setbacks, the two still found an opportunity to get active with soccer.
