Turkey Trot — Thursday, Nov. 24, starting at 9 a.m. at the Head Start Building at Empire Lakes in Coos Bay. The 21st-annual Thanksgiving Day event encourages runners and walkers to choose their own distance. The event is not a competition and participants are encouraged to visit when they are done. The entry fee is two food items to be donated to a local food bank. For more information, call Barbara or Tim Young at 541-267-7960.
Mac’s Run — Saturday, Dec. 10, starting at 10 a.m. at Sunset Bay State Park. The event features 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer races and honors E.P. “Mac” McKean-Smith, who ran into his 80s before dying in 1998. The courses are challenging and hilly, with the 5K race taking participants through Shore Acres State Park and the longer one also including Cape Arago State Park. The entry fee is $32 with a quarter-zippered sweatshirt for runners who register by Nov. 22. The fee with a sweatshirt increases to $38 on race day. The fee without a sweatshirt is $7.
