Preece Power Poll: Knights to keep rolling?
The Eagles and Buckaroos are the class of the 1A division. Duchesne put up either 65 or 82 points last week, I'm getting conflicting reports, but at any rate these Eagles are good. The 1A semi-finals will take place at Wasatch High School on Saturday.
Preece's Pontifications: The game I covered last week for the Daily Herald was Maple Mountain vs. Highland. I figured and predicted that Highland would win comfortably--and it did.
The game wasn't all about physical talent on the field. Highland did have Sione Houma and Fish Smithson, and granted they were probably the two most talented players on the field. But overall I didn't see a huge talent gap between the two schools. In fact, Maple Mountain was just as big and probably a deeper team with the ability to platoon many of its players.
When examining the Highland roster I loved how its roster has every single player playing two positions. That's what they are taught. There is no specialization here. Highland is actually the smallest (in population) 4A school, and they just don't have enough good players to platoon. Earlier in the season one would have seen Smithson playing free safety for the Rams. And Highland has this player named Hayes Hicken who plays wide receiver and defensive back as well as being the kicker and punter. I didn't see him leave the field one time in the game Friday evening.
