Familiar faces could lead the way Sunday in the inaugural Rock 'n' Roll St. Louis Marathon and Half-Marathon.
Expected to compete in the half is Josphat Boit, who won the GO! St. Louis half in April. Mathew and Benson Chesang, who finished second and third in last week's GO! Halloween 10K, were scheduled to compete in their first full marathons. Mathew has won the GO! half twice.
They'll be joined at the front of the pack by a dozen U.S. men and women hoping to meet the qualifying standards for the Olympic marathon trials. Runners can compete in the trials in January in Houston by completing a half-marathon in 1 hour, 5 minutes for men and 1:15 for women or by completing a marathon in 2:19 for men, 2:46 for women.
The feat is a tall task here because of the rolling hills and many turns along the 13.1- and 26.2-mile courses, which wind from downtown through south St. Louis and back.
Qualifying is not entirely out of the question, though, according to Alan Culpepper, a former Olympic marathoner and the course designer. He said that the winner of Rock 'n' Roll Denver last month, Colorado native Chris Siemers punched his ticket for Houston.
